Macmillan Education Eswatini donated 417 sanitary towels to The Girl Child Sanitary Pads Campaign, valued at E5000. This donation was presented by Mr Bongani Motsa (MD) to Tlalane Dlamini, the leader of the campaign, at Macmillan premises on the 1st of February 2022.

The initiative by The Times of Eswatini was inspired by a popular comedian Dr. Shakes, who decided to celebrate his birthday by donating 136 sanitary towels to the Girl Child.  The purpose of the campaign was to make sure that every girl has a three months’ supply of sanitary towels without lacking.

After a proposal from the Times of Eswatini – Eswatini’s leading newspaper – Macmillan Education Eswatini gave in to the campaign, mainly because it touches on the girl child at school, who often finds herself vulnerable to a series of health and socio-economic challenges. Speaking at the presentation, Macmillan’s managing director, Bongani Motsa, mentioned that it was important for Macmillan to join hands in this great initiative. He mentioned that research has proven that a girl child can be absent from school for a period of four to five days in every 28 days just because she lacks sanitary towels. He said the company prided itself in helping EmaSwati who are in need. ‘‘We are happy to be a part of the campaign which was started by The Times of Eswatini through Dr Shakes. As a company, it is important for us to extend a helping hand to EmaSwati as they have also shown great support to us as a company” Motsa emphasised.

He further encouraged other companies to also use this platform as a way of giving back and reaching out. These sanitary towels are then donated to needy girls, particularly in remote rural areas. In most of these communities poverty is severe, such that some young girls cannot afford sanitary towels, yet they are still expected to attend school unfailingly. Macmillan Eswatini gained brand visibility and the government’s recognition for being part of this life-changing initiative.
